Shortage of Accountants in New Zealand
Kathy Glass, the Managing Director of KG Recruitment, has been recruiting Chartered Accountants for professional firms since 2001.
Since then we have noticed the number of unfilled roles in CA firms has been increasing steadily in all three of the main services provided by CA firms:
* Business Advisory Services (BAS)
* Audit and;
We have found that for the last 2 years at least that we have over 30 vacancies usually in BAS, Audit or Tax consistently. Partly, this is because when one role is filled, it then creates a role elsewhere. KG Recruitment is well reputed for providing a professional and honest service to both clients and candidates that we continually have a large number of positive, strong relationships with many CA firms in New Zealand.
Wages have been increasing, yet we still have a shortage of high calibre Accountants applying for these roles. One of the main reasons for this is because so many of our NZ CA trained Accountants leave NZ once they have passed their professional exams (PCE1, PAS/PCE2) and completed log books at an ATO (Approved Training Organisation), to become full members of NZICA, (New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants). They mainly go to Australia or the United Kingdom for their overseas experience.
Kathy Glass has just returned from the UK recently and found that the salaries being paid in London for our NZ Accountants ranged from 200 GBP per day to 700 GBP per day. Therefore our NZ Chartered Accountants seem to be staying more than the usual 2 years OE that used to be the norm around 20 years ago, to the extent that some have not been returning at all. Even with the lure of the balanced lifestyle and flexibility that many NZ CA firms are offering employees, it appears to so far not be enough to attract some of them to return.
